Rail Turntable Overview

The rail turntable—also known as a rail rotating platform or turntable transfer cart—is a heavy-duty directional transfer device designed for use with rail flatcars. It is installed in a pit at the intersection of rail lines inside a workshop, with rails installed on the deck to match the gauge of the existing ground tracks.

Capable of rotating a fully loaded rail flatcar 360° in place, the turntable eliminates the need for complex railway switches or curved tracks, effectively overcoming the limitation that rail vehicles can only move along fixed straight routes. It is widely used for multi-directional material transfer in facilities such as stone processing plants, steel mills, and energy storage manufacturing sites.

The system consists of a heavy-duty rotating deck, slewing bearing, variable-frequency drive motor, and electronic positioning control system. It supports load capacities ranging from 1 to 100 tons. The deck surface is flush with the workshop floor, requiring no additional operating space or clearance area.

II. Operational Process

A fully loaded rail flatcar enters the turntable deck along the main track. After the vehicle is fully positioned on the platform, it automatically brakes and locks to prevent movement during rotation.

The operator activates the turntable through a remote controller or control panel. The variable-frequency drive system rotates the deck smoothly to the preset angle of 90°, 180°, or 360°.

Limit sensors precisely detect and calibrate the rotation angle, ensuring that the deck rails align accurately with the target ground tracks. The alignment error is controlled within 3 mm, after which the platform automatically locks into position.

The rail flatcar brake is then released, allowing the vehicle to move off the turntable onto the newly aligned track and complete the directional transfer. This process can be repeated continuously to support material transportation between multiple workstations.
